The dealer's comments make no sense to me.
The engine runs warm - so do all air cooled engines.
The distance you can run between tanks of gas is about 100 miles - so have a coffee and let her cool at each gas stop if you are concerned about engine temperatures - and as other replies have said - keep your eye on the oil level.( Loose that and you will loose the engine for sure - temp or distances regardless)
How fast are you running - my Savage feels like it would run all day at 60 mph without a murmur - try using premium gas - smoothed out the backfiring without removing the spacer.
